White Eagle Credit Union Welcomes New President and CEO

White Eagle Credit Union Welcomes New President and CEO

Augusta, KS – The Board of Directors has chosen Eric Brown as President and Chief Executive Officer of White Eagle Credit Union (WECU), starting Monday, May 23, 2022. The Board followed the succession plan to ensure an orderly process for executive leadership transition. WECU’s Board of Directors are elected by membership and give their time and experience to ensure the organization meets the needs of its members and the community.

“Eric excelled among a very strong pool of candidates and has demonstrated a solid vision for the future of WECU,” said Ron Reavis, Board Chair. Ron continued, “Over the past five months, the Search Committee and Board worked to find someone that would meet the current and future needs of White Eagle Credit Union. I am proud to say that White Eagle Credit Union’s reputation of changing lives and lifting communities through financial wellness and involvement inspired so many wonderfully gifted people to apply to lead our organization.”

Eric is an accomplished senior executive who brings more than 23 years of experience, growth, and leadership in the financial services industry. Eric has served as Senior Vice President – Branch Delivery with Emprise Bank and Vice President – Sales and Service with Meritrust Credit Union.

Today looks quite a bit different than it did 23 years ago. Eric explains, “Then, it was locations, locations, locations. Convenience of those locations was vital, being able to meet your member where they were shopping, living, or driving by. We did not have smartphones back then or the branch right in our pockets. Branches are important and will always have a key role in our Credit Union. However, meeting the member where they are now includes the branch that sits on their phone. So, continuing to evolve that channel and its capabilities while remaining safe and secure will be important for continued growth.”

Leadership

Eric’s passion and leadership style are centered on people helping people and neighbors helping neighbors. When asked why he chose WECU, Eric stated “When people can grow personally and professionally at the same time, they can achieve exponential growth. WECU’s employees have terrific tenure. What excites me about this, is our ability to grow together. When our employees are growing, our membership benefits from that and will grow as well.”

Community Service

Community service is a key part of what makes White Eagle CU. “When it comes to community service it goes beyond sponsorships and donations. These are just a couple of ways we can help support our communities. But beyond that, connecting with your community and having your community connect with WECU is about volunteering. It is about getting our hands dirty right next to the other people doing the work” Eric explains.

Goals

Eric’s main goal is with every person he meets or encounters that their day should be better. Whether it is a simple smile, a light-hearted laugh together, a cup of coffee or a financial product that can make your financial life better.

Eric lives in Augusta, KS with his wife Tricia. They have three sons – Easton, Ericson, and Emmett where they live by their passion as a family of people helping people. “When we bow our heads to pray at dinner, the one phrase we always pray is “help us be blessings to others”. For those of you that we have been fortunate enough to know, I hope you have felt that in one way or another. For those of you we have yet to meet, we very much look forward to it.”

Eric currently serves on the AHS CTE Advisory Committee and University of Kansas Advisory Council and has been involved in Augusta Youth Basketball, Football, Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Augusta Inc (currently known as GoAugusta!). Eric studied and graduated from Butler Community College, Emporia State University, Stonier Graduation School of Banking and received a Certificate of Leadership from the Wharton School at Penn.

Incoming WECU President and CEO Eric Brown officially assumes his duties on May 23, 2022. White Eagle Credit Union is a not-for-profit cooperative financial institution serving those in Butler County and the surrounding counties/communities.  White Eagle has three convenient branch locations in Augusta, El Dorado and Newton.  Currently, White Eagle Credit Union serves more than 14,000 members with assets exceeding 140 million. For 87 years White Eagle Credit Union has been serving its members and communities. Nothing has changed. They are Here to serve YOU today.

How does one close a chapter of a CEO/president who gave 36 years to the White Eagle Credit Union? What words accurately express our gratitude to the man that led this credit union from a tiny office on State Street in Augusta to an organization of three full-service locations in Augusta, El Dorado and Newton?

We don’t have them. But we believe that collectively as a board of directors, employees and members of the White Eagle Credit Union, we could fill pages in his honor. We are grateful and are determined to carry out the legacy of not only Rick Blue, but all those who have come before him for the last 86 years. From the humble beginnings of seven men meeting under an oak tree in Augusta in 1935, to what we are today.

The Board of Directors, in accordance with the Succession Plan of White Eagle Credit Union, has named Jennifer L. Don’t fall for Gift Card Scam

Don’t fall for Gift Card Scam.  Gift cards are for gifts, not for payments.

If someone calls with urgent news or a convincing story and pressures you to pay them by buying a gift card, like an iTunes, WalMart, or Google Play card, and want you to give them the codes on the back of the card – stop. It’s a scam.  Here are couple scenarios that scammers may use.

  • A scammer calls and pretends to be from a government agency.  Such as IRS or Social Security. The scammer says that you owe money for taxes, bail money, debt collection, and more. They then tell you have to pay them with gift cards.
  • A scammer claims to be a family member in trouble or someone you know. The scammer tells you that they need to be paid in gift cards in order to remedy the situation. Don’t believe them. Never buy gift cards for them or provide them with any gift card codes.
  • You receive an email that looks like it from someone you know i.e.: your boss, mother, spouse, friend, family member and the person asks you to go buy gift cards and give them the code on back…. STOP!  It’s a scam.
  • Let’s make some quick money scam.  You are short on money and you see the “Make Quick Money” advertisement. Beware this is a scam.   The way it works:  The scammer is always excited when someone answers their ad. All you have to do is buy them a few gift cards.  They will deposit money in your account for the cards plus a few extra dollars for your time.  However, they need your banking information in order to deposit the money.  DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFORMATION.  It is a SCAM.

If you are ever in doubt if something is correct.  Just stop.  Give us a call and whatever you do… do not share your personal information and banking information.  Thank you.

If you’re a victim of a gift card scam – report it. You can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission.

Also, share your experience.  There are many ways to help prevent others from falling victim by reporting the scam and sharing your experience via social Medias and also on Google.

Paying Down Credit Card Debt

Just when you thought 2020 was devoid of good news for Americans – here is a small financial reason to smile! U.S. consumers paid down a record amount of credit card debt this past year.

Tips to paying down credit card debtWEBudget

Paying off credit card debt can seem daunting – especially if you’ve amassed quite a bit. But with determination and some solid advice, living credit-card-debt free is possible. Here are some tips from Credit.com to get started in the right direction:

  1. Get organized – Gather all the information for every card on which you’re carrying a balance. Note the balances, interest rates, due dates and minimum payment for each card. Add up all the minimum payments on each of your credit cards to determine how much you must pay each month just to stay on top of credit card bills.
  2. Consider paying off the card with the highest APR first –Try boosting your payments on the card with the highest APR and paying the minimums on the remaining cards. Once that card is paid off, move on to the card with the next highest APR.
  3. Or consider paying off the card with the lowest balance first –This may be a method that’s easier to stick to for those who have a difficult time staying motivated without quick gratification. Enjoy the feeling of paying off that lowest balance – then keep paying off from there!
  4. Create a budget –If you’re not spending within your means, you’ll likely never be able to pay down debt.  Create a budget that works for you, leaving wiggle room to pay down that credit card debt. WEBudget is the perfect tool that shows your spending and allows you to create your budget.  Check it out in WEOnline Services.
  5. Be realistic – It’s important to remember that you still need to spend money on necessities (food, clothes, rent, etc.). So be realistic about how much you can put toward your credit card debt each month.
  6. Schedule Payments – You can schedule ongoing payments in WEPay.  You set the dates and amounts. Making it easier to stay ahead and payoff items quicker.

WECU Cardholder Fraud Education

WECU Cardholder Fraud Education.

It is a new year and a busy time of year for everyone including the fraudsters.

Unfortunately, fraudsters have been getting cardholders to share the information they need to commit fraud.  One way is by posing as  financial institution call center agents. They are also known to send text messages that look like they are coming from your financial institution. These text messages may contain a warning of suspicious transaction activities.

Here are some following points to help you avoid compromising your personal information:

Text and Phone Alerts
  • A text alert from Fiserv  warning of suspicious activity on a cardholder’s card will NEVER include a link to be clicked. Cardholders should never click on a link in a text message that is supposedly from Fiserv. A valid notification from Fiserv will provide information about the suspect transaction and ask the cardholder to reply to the text message with answers such as ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘help’, or ‘stop,’ and will never include a link.
  • A text alert from Fiserv will always be from a 5-digit number and NOT a 10-digit number resembling a phone number.
What should I do if I receive a phone call from Fiserv
  1. No information should have to be provided by the cardholder other than their zip code
  2. Only answer “yes” or “no” to their questions.
  3. Fiserv will NEVER ask for the PIN or the 3-digit security code on the back of a card.  Only a fraudster will tell you that they are going to issue you a new card and need your PIN number
  4. If a transaction is confirmed fraudulent, then Fiserv will ask for more information.  The cardholder will then be transferred to an agent who will ask questions to confirm the card member’s identity before going through their transactions.
  5. Feel uneasy about the call or questions, please hang up and call WECU.

Final note:  Please check your account(s) regularly for online for suspicious transactions.  Especially if you are unsure about a call or text message you have received. If anything looks amiss,  please call WECU directly for assistance.
